To get started, Apple announced today a new Apple TV that will now have a bigger processor allowing for true 1080p videos. Additionally there will be an all newly designed interface that will allow for third-party apps. The new Apple TV will be available for pre-order today for the same price of $99.

Also announced today will be the release of 5.1 available today, hopefully by OTA updates. So be on the lookout for that update although a relatively insignificant update there are a few things that you might enjoy like the ability to delete photos from your photo stream.

The new iPad comes with a lot of new features (mostly found in the existing iPhone model the 4S) but also a lot of software updates to the existing paid apps that Apple offers as part of their iWork and iLife suites, including an additional iPhoto app. The new iPad will include the following changes:

• A new A5X quad core processor.
• The same 10 hour battery life.
• Retina Display featuring 1080p video viewing with ‎2048×1536 display resolution (3.1 million pixels).
• 5mp camera just like the iPhone 4S with all the features and benefits that come with it (Stabilization, auto-focus, etc.).
• 4G LTE with 3G Backup available on both Verizon and AT&T in the US as well as many international carriers. With LTE data speeds will be up to 73mbps.
• Voice Dictation.
• The same size storage and same price points as previously with the iPad 2 starting at $599 for the 16GB.
• Available in both black and white.

One of the nicest looking apps I have seen in a long time, this relatively new app which functions virtually identically between the iPhone and the iPad is sure to please the eye even if the actual data you are seeing does not. Stock Touch, released in June of 2011, is designed with a very simple format and layout in mind presenting the top 900 performing stocks spread out across 9 different sectors (100 per sector). While the app is targeted to the retail investor, Steve deBrun the CEO of Visible Market Inc. said that “anyone who is interested in monitoring the stock market and understanding the dynamics of how price and volume shifts across different sectors” would be a prospective user of this app. This is a universal app and so one purchase allows you to use it across all of your iDevices.

With the native Apple stock app on the iPhone, the average user might find this app a hard sell at $4.99. Of course the Apple stock app is noticeably absent on the iPad along with the beauty that this app provides. This is sure to more than make up for the missing native app if you are looking for a way to follow stocks from your iPad. After having installed this app I have found myself consistently declining to use the Apple version in favor of this app which gives me an overall stock data experience better than that which the native app provides.

The unique design found in Stock Touch allows users to have an “immersive, zoomable heat map” of the 900 top performing stocks. Navigation is simple and easy to use allowing the users to zoom into sectors and then again into individual stocks to view a variety of data on that stock including price, volume and news about the company. And then of course the ability to easily adjust the time frame referenced in the data anywhere from 1day to 5 years.

Some of the best features I found while using this app include:

• The ease of virtualizing performance over a specific period from 1 day to 5 years, viewing stocks in a range of colors from green to red which gives an indication of performance.
• News reports listed for that stock from a wide variety of news sources including: The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, The New York Times, The Motley Fool, CNN, Marketwatch Blogs, Yahoo, etc.
• Additional data includes details about that time period (open, close, 52wk high and low, dividend yield, volume and market cat) With an option to switch between: Price Change, Volume, vs S&P 500 and vs Sector for the color display as well as ordering in the sector.
• Sector can be organized in a spiral (large to small) or by Market Cap, Winners, Activity or Alphabetical.
• Easy controls for navigation and settings for determining the data that I would like to see.
• Integrated with iCloud which means that stocks I marks a favorite on one device syncs to all of my devices.
• Favorites stand out on the heat map so that I can easily identify them from the beginning.
• An additional bar can be displayed showing the current status of the major market indices (Dow, S&P and NASDAQ).

I had relatively few issues with the app, when I first launched it I zoomed in to Apple’s stock and then for a minute or so had a hard time figuring out how to zoom back out. I tried a bunch of methods and finally figured out that by pinching I could zoom out, which is a standard gesture for iDevices. I additionally was unble to find several of the stocks that I wished to view, but later realized that this included a limited number of stocks. Nonetheless, even if only the top 900 were available on the heat map, I expected a raw search to yield results and it did not. Upon speaking with Steve deBrun, I was able to learn that they would like to find a way to “greatly expanding the amount of stocks”. So I believe this issue will be fixed in the future. This was the only issue that I felt was necessary when going from Apple’s native stock app given I can add any stock to view in that app.

The team of developers working on this app which started out with one server-side developer, one client-side developer and one designer, is quickly working to add a myriad of new feature in the near the future. They would like to add dynamic, zoomable watch-lists as well as a whole host of pro features that will be available for a cost. They also plan to add the ability to track sentiment and deeper analytics. So at present, this app is being actively developed and new features are sure to come. This is a great app and definitely worth the $4.99 (less than a stock trade) to keep the information you are looking for at your finger tips in a very eye pleasing format.

I don’t normally engage in the speculation about what could be coming in the latest updates, by the looks of it we are sure to have at least a better resolution and a faster CPU. Rumors even say that we may have a 4G LTE radio. Whatever it is Apple has planned I am sure it will be stunning and will keep the masses in line to buy the latest and greatest.

Spring time has always brought excitement for me, as the world starts to come alive with plants and flowers growing and of course the world is warming up. But the best part about spring has always been spring training and then of course the start of the new season of Baseball, a chance for my team to finally show their stuff. Every year around february I start to get a serious case of Spring Fever as I can feel this season approaching. And now it is all about to pay off as we grow close (just 7 days) to the first Spring Training game of 2012. To top it all off, if the rumors are correct, then we are just 3 or so weeks away from the announcement of the upcoming release of the iPad. There are a lot of great things that are expected to be released this year with the new iPad, they are all just rumors for now though so I hesitate to speculate. But I do think a few features we’ll see will be the retina display along with improved/increased CPU and memory, and of course a lot more disk space. Beyond that I can only begin to guess and as I have said before, no matter how much guessing I do Apple never ceases to amaze me with the actual product they release.

Baseball fans rejoice, the official start of Spring Training (with the first spring training game in 9 days) is almost here with the start of the new season shortly behind that. And for those of you who are MLB.tv subscribers it just got a bit better this year. In past years to view regular games on the go you needed: MLB At Bat (iPhone) and maybe even MLB At Bat (iPad) and a subscription to MLB.tv Premium. Each MLB At Bat app ran you $15 plus $119 for the annual subscription. This would allow you to watch unlimited, non-blackedout, games and archived games as well as unlimited audio from either your iPhone or iPad. If you were like me, you probably found a use for both devices as they both have their ups and downs but this means you pay $150 per year to get all of this.

But there is good news, starting this year MLB is finally getting right by offering free iPad and iPhone apps which come with the basic features and then you can easily unlock all of the premium features by simply entering in the login information for your MLB.tv Premium account. To make the deal even sweeter they are offering last years price to ($119) to re-subscribers as appose to the new price of $124. The question though is whether or not MLB really has done it right, but we’ll have to wait another 8 days to find out!

With an expected release date of 2/29/2012, the MBL At Bat 2012 iOS apps are expected to be better than ever and according to MLB, they will be free and will provide you the ability to unlock your premium content giving you the expected features as in the past. The two apps have always been uniquely different from each other, with the iPad app featuring a 3D graphical layout of the field from the umpire’s perspective in addition to a myriad of information about the game, teams and the players, it also provides archive video as well as live video of non-blacked out games and audio of *all* games. The iPhone provides push notifications of the start/finish of every game you choose as well as the audio and video described in the iPad app. It is obviously easier to watch the game from the iPad but the iPhone provides the convenience of mobility for those who are on the road and want to listen to a game during a commute or any number of other mobile circumastances.

So keep an eye open on 2/29/2012 for the updated MLB At Bat 2012 apps as well as a renewal of your 2011 MLB.tv Premium Subscription.

Air PlayIt is a FREE media client and server for streaming both music and video over your local network as well as over the Internet. There are currently several apps that do either part or all of what this app offers, but none of the free apps in the app store offer both the functionality as well as quality that this app offers. There are though still a few issues that will prevent me from using this as my primary video application, I will outline them below. However for a free app, they do a good job of delivering what they say they can deliver. This is not a universal app, but both the iPhone and iPad version are available for free in the app store and both function in the same way other than general lay out.

As of writing this I have yet to find an application that can perform better than Air Video. I use this app regularly and have reviewed it; not only does it have a large portion of the features that I would like to have in an app such as this, the cost is relatively inexpensive ($2.99). It is also a universal app and I have very few problems at all with the app or the server. Upon downloading and using AirPlayIt, one of the first things I noticed was how very similar the UI looked to Air Video. Although I suppose there are only so many ways to present the content, I almost had the stinking suspicion that they were inspired by the later.

The experience of setting up the server and getting going took relatively little time, I downloaded the server at:http://www.airplayit.com and started it up and then tab by tab went through all of the preferences to get it configured properly. This is where I noticed a few features that Air Video didn’t have that we’re quite nice. Setting up was easy and I had the ability to setup permissions on a folder level for each users. The users each could have an individual password and could be things like: adult, kids, guests. The idea being that the content which is not age appropriate and perhaps not guest appropriate could be secured behind a password preventing these users from accessing those folders. There is also the option of setting up audio files allowing you to stream an audio library in addition to videos.

After setting up the server I began testing out the app, again very simple to get going. This was when I started to notice some of the issues that I referenced above. One of the first problems I noticed was that it did an encode of every video I played regardless of whether or not it was needed. This posed a serious threat to my system as this encode also used up all of the available CPU. This however was remedied last week with an update to the app that allowed me to specify it to force an encode or not. By default this is now off which means it is no longer a problem. Also when encoding a video file, whether needed or not, the video itself paused roughly every ten seconds. This pause is enough to make the viewing process a problem. Luckily now that I can have it not encode the files that is a lot better. The viewing process is very similar to Air Video, although Air Video uses their own custom player which you may or may not like. AirPlayIt allows you to switch easily between full screen or partial screen when on the iPad, and adjust things. You can also use ’s Air Play to watch th video on any air play enabled device such as an TV, but here is where that went wrong, unfortunately it does not support background watching of the video. This means if I leave the app while the video is playing or even hit the sleep button on my device, the video stops. This one issue alone cost them a full star and makes the app not usable for me. More often than not I use such an app with my TV and so to essentially loose this ability means that I cannot use it.

But for those of you who do not use it for anything more than paying on your device, I think you will find that the feature set more than makes up for any of its short comings and the fact that it is free means it hurts you nothing to try it out. They’ve done a nice job with both the client and the server and have features in the client such as compression queue, download to the application, and a history of video files you have watched. These are features that I have not seen in a lot of other apps and they are great to have. I was quite skeptical when I first found this app as to how it would match up to competition. But I think they have done a great job and with a few additional (but necessary) features could have a 5 star application.

Because iMessages go over ’s servers and not your carriers server, they are free and unlimited. The greed of the carriers has led them to charge incredible rates for something that amounts to less than an email. Still to this day, even if you have an unlimited SMS plan, carriers are ripping you off whenever you send an international SMS by charging high rates. Depending on the type of message, the cost can be $1 or more per message. But thankfully with iMessages you can now stay in touch with friends and family abroad without the added cost.

When sending the iMessage, just be sure to send it using + and then the country code and then the phone number. Using 011 or any other format will not work unless used from your address book. For example if sending to France: (since I have friends and family there) I would put: +33 and then the full phone number including area code.

* WARNING: it is absolutely essential when sending iMessages internationally that you verify that you are using iMessages instead of SMS to avoid a huge surprise bill at the end of the month. Of course this is as simple as ensuring that the bubble is blue, every time (yours, not theirs) and if done properly, the user will always be replying via iMessage as well. For me, I have my ‘caller id’ setup as an email address which guarantees that they will always reply as an iMessage since they cannot send SMS (and bill me) to an email address.

Combined together with a few good apps, I can get most things done, from email to IM to programming. With each of these I can do the majority of thigns I would for work. This makes for a nice way to concentrate on my job while hanging out in the park (with WiFi of course) or at the coffee shop, without having to lug the laptop around. At present all of my work lives on an internal server, which means once I connect through the VPN and then via the iSSH app (Which I have found to be the best SSH app in the app store) I can connect to the remote server and access all of my work. Using Screen (if you are a linux/unix user and don’t know screen, look it up, you’ll love it) carefully configured to work exactly as I want, I can pick up on my work exactly where I left off. Should I get disconnected from the internet unexpectedly or need to shutdown for a while, screen automaticlly saves my place where I left off. This technique has even been useful while in the office when going to your standard boring meeting if I want to continue working on something right from my iPad.

Add in the native email app which allows me to stay responsive as needed, and then of course IM. I use BeejiveIM (pronounced beehive) for IM, it is a fantastic IM app with a variety of options available for configuration to make it the perfect app. You can connect to a variety of services, just about every service out there. And since we use it pretty heavily for communication at the office this is a great way for me to stay in touch. And of course, don’t forget the native Music app or Pandora or Spotify. These apps provide me with the musical entertainment I need to stimulate my mind and keep working. I use this together with my bluetooth headphones which keeps me completely wireless and productive.

Working like this is even better now with iOS 5.0 which has the notification center, that means that I no longer have notifications interrupting my work, but rather displaying a small banner at the top of the screen while keeping me working. The only down side to working like this is that there is a lot of functionality missing (that I hope  brings to us in the future) for working with a bluetooth keyboard. For example there is no “send” button on the keyboard, that means if you are in iMessage or sending an email, after you are done typing the email or iMessage, you will still need to touch the screen to send. Navigating between apps must still be done via touching the screen. But most bluetooth keyboards do come with extra keys for going to your home screen and controlling your music. You can also use a lot of key combinations available on your laptop such as command-c and command-v for copy and paste. The gestures are really quite simple and easy to use. It is all merely a matter of getting in the habbit of using them instead of the home button. Each gesture is done using 4 or 5 fingers. To start, make sure you have multitask gestures turned in in the settings by going to: settings -> general -> multitask gestures. There are three main gestures, to switch between applications you are currently using swipe with 4 or 5 fingers left or right, to go forward or backward. Swipe up to view the multitask bar (and back down to hide it) and the final gesture is to pinch inward while in any app using all 4 or 5 fingers, this will take you to the home screen. Practice using them, they are very helpful and after a time you will grow to love them.

Using google with exchange isn’t very different than imap but it does come with its benefits and downsides. Personally I opt to use exchange for my gmail account as the imap ports are blocked while on the network at my office, so this is a good way around it for me. Some of the other benefits you get is that you get the data pushed to you instead of your device having to fetch it. That means you get calendar, contact changes and emails as soon as they are sent. This also means less battery usage as your device doesn’t have to spend as much fetching. With exchange, you can also access all, or a limited subset of your gmail calendars and have their data pushed to you. You get all the benefits of exchange when it comes to scheduling appointments and inviting attendees. The main downside is the lack of the notes feature that you get with imap, allowing you to use the  native notes app and store them with your gmail account. I am not sure why this is not available for exchange accounts in iOS.

To setup the account, simply go to settings -> mail, contacts, calendars -> add account. Make sure you choose Microsoft exchange as the account type. Then add it as you previously have, using your gmail address for the username. After hitting next it will attempt to verify and then ask you for more information, all you need to fill in is the server: m.google.com then you are all set! To setup calendars (picking and choosing which calendars you can access from each device) simple visit the following page from your device: https://m.google.com:443/sync/settings/ and login using your gmail credentials. You will then be able to choose which calendars to display for this device.
