Netflix updates iOS Apps

15 Dec

Netflix has released an update to their iOS apps, as a Universal App this update applies to both the iPhone and iPad apps although it primarily affect the iPad app. Besides making the iOS apps now availalbe in Latin American countries which represents an expansion for Netflix’s streaing service, this update also provides us with a completely re-designed iPad app.

I have heard many complaints in the past regarding the iPad app which closely resembled the iPhone app in a larger form. I too have not been a huge fan of the format they used. Now with this update they have fixed a lot of the usability issues that users have had as well as giving us a nice new design. You can view recently watched shows up top as well as recommended shows by category. Or navigation through the browser or your Instant Queue. They have done a great job with this update providing us with a better user experience.

I have seen a few complaints online that they left out the ability to use AirPlay with this version of the app, while this is true I do not see it as a valid complaint given that AirPlay only works (currently) with an TV which already has a Netflix app on it. I fail therefore to see the need to have an AirPlay option available.

Here are the notes from Netflix regarding this update:

New in Netflix v 2.0

1. Netflix now available in Latin America for iPhone and iPad
2. New iPad UI for all regions – US, Canada, Latin America – requires upgrade to iOS 5
3. Addressed stability issues
4. For support questions please contact us at mobilesupport@netflix.com

Apple Updates Second Gen Apple TVs

01 Aug

If you own a second generation TV, head over to the updates section and get the latest update for your device. Apple today released an update to second generation TVs that is sure to drive more consumers toward their purchase option for TV shows rather than renting. Additionally it will bring more consumers to the device as a whole. The new iCloud like feature allows you to view all the TV shows I have previously purchased and stream them right to my TV.

Apple Releases iOS 4.3

09 Mar

Apple iOS 4.3

Apple today released iOS 4.3, an update to their iOS software for iPad, iPhone and iPod devices. Presumably with this release will also come an update to the TV given that one of the new features specifically is relative to using the AirPlay functionality in third party apps with your TV. The real question is, what does this update mean for you and how will it affect you.

Review: Pandora Radio (iPhone)

30 Nov

Pandora Radio (Pandora Media, Inc. FREE) Universal App

This is a universal app and although the two versions function similar, there are definitely a few differences between the iPhone and iPad versions. So for the sake of this review, I will be specifically referring to the iPhone version. I will come back and review the iPad version at a later date. At present, I use the iPhone version a lot more than the iPad version.

I actually didn’t start using this app until recently. I installed it back when it was first released. At the time I thought it was pretty cool, I liked the app but for the most part felt it to be unpractical. My biggest issue was that I had to stay in the app to listen to music. That pretty much defeated the purpose for me as I am often doing other things on my iPhone, especially before i got my iPad. Even prior to the release of multitasking, Apple had provided a way to run background audio, the MLB app took advantage of this, but Pandora did not.

However now that multitasking for audio is available, i find myself now using the app a whole lot more. I have always enjoyed the functionality, the ability to create a radio station based on a specific song or artist. It has worked well for me for a long time, and I don’t even mind the commercials. But having the app running in the background while I do any number of other things, makes this app one of my top ten used iPhone apps. I often (these days) find myself turning on Pandora radio and listening for hours while I work, finding all kinds of new music that I like but had no idea about previously. I have also ended up buying several tracks in iTunes because of that.

Review: iOS 4.2.1 (iPhone and iPad)

22 Nov

The long awaited release of iOS 4.2.1 is finally here. If you have not yet upgraded I encourage you to do so, it is absolutely worth the update. I have been using it on my iDevices for several months now and am so use to the features that when I touch a device without iOS 4.2 I am uncomfortable with it. I cannot imagine going back to a time when I did NOT have multitasking on my iPad. I have been reluctant to speak about iOS 4.2.1 until now because, as a developer, I am under NDA. Although some may take that lightly, I do not. But now that it is released, I can speak freely about the features that this update brings.

The majority of new features by far are on the iPad as this is the first update to the iPad with 4.x. That being said I will likely focus the majority of this post on the iPad version, but needless to say, this update brings a unification of the iPad and iPhone versions of iOS 4.x so just about everything you will see on the iPad is something that will now be (or already is) on the iPhone. That of course means all the benefits that we have seen with iOS 4.1 on the iPhone are now available for the iPad (finally!!) Additionally, all the new features such as AirPlay and AirPrint are now available for all devices that support them. The iPad just became all that much more useful in my opinion. Never fear Jailbreakers, my understanding is there is already a Jailbreak available for 4.2.1. It shouldn’t be too hard to find more information about that subject on the interwebs.

Many Apple Updates Today!

22 Nov

There are a lot of updates today to be on the look out for:

  • iOS 4.2.1 will be released today at 10am PST for all compatible devices including the iPhone, iPod and iPad.
  • TV firmware update to 4.1 will be released today. This update brings AirPlay (video) to the TV and probably more features that I am not aware of.
  • Find My iPhone is now free for all current devices (I assume this means, iPad, latest gen iPod and iPhone 4)
  • Updates to the iWorks suite on the iPad for 4.x support including Printing, Multitasking as well as many bug fixes.

There appears to be a lot going on today with Apple! It stands to be a very exciting day. Once 4.2 is released, I’ll post screenshots as well as my impressions of it, until then I am still bound by NDA.
