The TV Update necessarily for 4.3 to correctly interface with it is out. To update your TV just go to the Settings menu, Update and let the TV do the rest of the work. The update brings a few notable changes including enhancements for Netflix and AirPlay. Two of the most interesting additions though is the addition of MLB and NBA tv on the TV. These two new channels are significant as they bring the TV in competition with its rivals such as the Roku box. Now since I already have a Roku, this isn’t that big of a change for me, but many of you I am sure will be excited to know that your MLB or NBA subscriptions will now work on the TV. So go update!! What are you waiting for??

The Christmas App Store
The iTunes store, App store and now iBookstore are of course the perfect place to give or receive a gift. For the past couple of years, I have seen it every Christmas day, a high number of tweets and Facebook posts that go something along the lines of: “my first post from my new _______ “. Although some of those new devices are undoubtedly some other substandard phone or PDA of some sort, a lot of them are posted from iDevices that were received as gifts Christmas morning. I have seen a lot of blog posts the past few days telling people about the best iPhone or iPad apps to install on your ‘new’ iDevice. Although I have a lot of suggestions, you really can find them plain and clear on my top ten lists. So this post won’t be about suggestions of what you can buy, but rather some of the things that make the best gifts for iDevice users all around.
Now, in general the apps, music or books one would buy for their iDevice is more of a personal decision. The books and music I like in particular will vary widely from that of another. Likewise my choice of apps ans games is based on my picky choices. So for me, purchasing something for my iDevice that I did not implicitly request, as a gift for me, may be a risky path to take. So one thing that works every time without fail is gift cards. Normally I am not a big fan of gift cards, but with iTunes it is certainly a good option. Apple has provided a great way of sending gift cards of any denomination, in addition to allowing you to buy iTunes gift cards from all your major stores (usually located close to checkout). These cards are great and I of course use them often to give out to people as gifts when I know they are into iDevices. The card can be used in any of the Apple stores for iDevices. The system automatically tracks a credit on your account for the amount you have remaining.
Review: iOS 4.2.1 (iPhone and iPad)
The long awaited release of iOS 4.2.1 is finally here. If you have not yet upgraded I encourage you to do so, it is absolutely worth the update. I have been using it on my iDevices for several months now and am so use to the features that when I touch a device without iOS 4.2 I am uncomfortable with it. I cannot imagine going back to a time when I did NOT have multitasking on my iPad. I have been reluctant to speak about iOS 4.2.1 until now because, as a developer, I am under NDA. Although some may take that lightly, I do not. But now that it is released, I can speak freely about the features that this update brings.
The majority of new features by far are on the iPad as this is the first update to the iPad with 4.x. That being said I will likely focus the majority of this post on the iPad version, but needless to say, this update brings a unification of the iPad and iPhone versions of iOS 4.x so just about everything you will see on the iPad is something that will now be (or already is) on the iPhone. That of course means all the benefits that we have seen with iOS 4.1 on the iPhone are now available for the iPad (finally!!) Additionally, all the new features such as AirPlay and AirPrint are now available for all devices that support them. The iPad just became all that much more useful in my opinion. Never fear Jailbreakers, my understanding is there is already a Jailbreak available for 4.2.1. It shouldn’t be too hard to find more information about that subject on the interwebs.
Many Apple Updates Today!
There are a lot of updates today to be on the look out for:
- iOS 4.2.1 will be released today at 10am PST for all compatible devices including the iPhone, iPod and iPad.
- TV firmware update to 4.1 will be released today. This update brings AirPlay (video) to the TV and probably more features that I am not aware of.
- Find My iPhone is now free for all current devices (I assume this means, iPad, latest gen iPod and iPhone 4)
- Updates to the iWorks suite on the iPad for 4.x support including Printing, Multitasking as well as many bug fixes.
There appears to be a lot going on today with Apple! It stands to be a very exciting day. Once 4.2 is released, I’ll post screenshots as well as my impressions of it, until then I am still bound by NDA.
