I am lumping these three apps together as there isn’t a whole lot to say about them other than a few notes on how they work, additionally they are all now native apps on the iPad 2 and generally I don’t review the native apps but in this case given that these apps are newly introduced to this device, I felt that they were worth mentioning. If you have an iPad 2 then you don’t have to do anything to get these apps, they will be present when you first turn it on. If you do not yet have an iPad 2, then it is time to get one. If you have an iPhone 4 then you are probably use to using the FaceTime and Camera app, Mac users are likely familiar with the Photobooth app. All three of these apps function virtually identical to their counterparts even if they look a bit different.

Updated Review: iMovie (Universal App)
iMovie (Apple inc. $4.99) Universal App

iMovie was updated with the release of the iPad 2 last week and with the changes they have made to this app I am changing the rating from a 3 star to a 4 star app. There are many changes that come with this update including the ability to use iMovie on multiple devices. Although technically speaking it is a universal app, it doesn’t actually install on the first generation iPad. There are ways of getting around that and getting it to install on a first gen iPad but part of the reason left it off that device was because of the slow CPU and lack of memory. There are a few minor differences between the iPad and iPhone versions of iMovie but for the most part it is identical. This review covers both versions of the app.
1 Week Later – Was It Worth It?
Here we are, 1 week later and the question on everyone’s mind is ‘was it worth it?’ I have had a lot of time to play with my iPad this week and although I have not had very much time at all to write about it, I wanted to make sure to write a few posts about the iPad 2. Everyone who knows me thinks of me as the biggest geek they know, often times this means that most all around me come to me for advise about their iPad, information on apps and tips on usage. I am always happy to give them advise, after all, that is why I started this blog. It still amazes me though that they are so surprise at how excited I was to get my iPad 2. We went from a lot of questions of ‘Why’ last week, to questions of ‘was it worth it’ to now, ‘how can I get an iPad 2′.

Review: iMovie (iPhone)
iMovie (Apple inc. $4.99)

If you’ve ever used iMovie on your Mac, you know how wonderful of a tool it really is. In fact with the release of iLive ’11 iMovie is now better than ever before. After having used iMovie on my Mac, I was looking forward to using it on my iPhone as well. I must say that upon trying it on my iPhone I was quite disappointed in how little it actually does for me. I expected to be able to do a lot of the things that I can do using my Mac, even if not as much. Unfortunately the app doesn’t do nearly enough. This is not a universal app and currently it only runs on an iPhone 4.
Now I am not exactly disappointed with iMovie on my iPhone and I definitely don’t regret my purchase, so don’t get me wrong. I do enjoy using this app and am happy I bought it. I just wish they would update the app to add in a few more things. The app does have a lot of benefits and I have seen a lot of examples online of people who are making full length feature films all on their iPhones. iMovie for iPhone allows me to edit and create a full movie right on my iPhone even if the interface is a bit tedious. After making that movie I can publish it to various destinations including YouTube and MobileMe. It is a lot of fun to shoot videos on my iPhone, assemble them together into something I have created, and then send that off to family and friends. When combined with a few other tools on the iPhone I find I can do most things I need to.
In addition to iMovie I also use other tools such as Sketches 2 which can be used to create images with text (for credits or other text in your movie), and then I can also include audio files from my iPod library. I find that to properly create a full video I have to go through several encodes in iMovie, exporting each and then re-encoding to get it all just right. One big problem I have found with iMovie is that videos I did not shoot on my iPhone are not available for working with in iMovie. I also wish there were more templates to work with, right now there are only 5 and that is quite limiting. It would be nice to have a few additional features such as the ability to add on multiple audio tracks.
