Apple iOS 4.3

Apple today released iOS 4.3, an update to their iOS software for iPad, iPhone and iPod devices. Presumably with this release will also come an update to the TV given that one of the new features specifically is relative to using the AirPlay functionality in third party apps with your TV. The real question is, what does this update mean for you and how will it affect you.

Apple Announces the iPad 2

02 Mar

Ok, we knew this was coming, we just didn’t have all the details. Well today Apple officially announced the release of the iPad 2. According to Steve Jobs, “2011. This will be the year of the iPad 2″, this new iPad is expected to by far outshine its competition. With a myriad of tablets expected to be released this year, the iPad really has to go far to stay ahead. One thing I have personally learned about Apple over the years is that no matter what people speculate going into an Apple event, they never cease to WOW me with the details of their new device. No matter how hard I try to not have to have that new device, I always end up being there to get it! The iPad 2 is no exception, with the sleek new design and new features it is sure to stay ahead of any competing device. And of course the hardest thing for any competitor is to beat that price!

AT&T Increases Allowed Bandwidth from 2 GB to 4 GB on Tethering Plans

14 Feb

We knew this would be coming, there was a lot of speculation about it and AT&T last week announced that they would be doing this for select smartphone tethering plans. The one thing they did not give us any incite on is when this would be available for iPhone users. Today AT&T sent out a Free Text Message to tethering users indicating that effective immediately their allotment of bandwidth would be raised to 4 GB Per month from 2 GB per month (see the screenshot of the text message I received below). This is a great first step toward competing with Verizon in this market and definitely needed. Alone, the extra $20 a month to tether is almost not justifiable, sure it gives an added convenience but it should come with additional bandwidth, paying an additional $20 should get you something. Alternatively, don’t charge us for the ability to tether. I am pretty happy with this change and 4 GB a month is more than enough and will make this service very valuable, particular if the upcoming release of 4.3 does indeed include a Personal Hotspot feature for AT&T customers.

The Daily Hands Out Subscription Extension

13 Feb

The Daily free trial has been extended until the end of the month so those of you who are giving it a go right now will have some more time to play around with it and see if it is the right app for you. Originally The Daily was offering a free 2 week trial for all users, but many of those users are now seeing (upon viewing their subscription expiration date) an end date of February 28, 2011. Many suspect that the reasoning behind this extension is because the in-app subscription based charges that are required for this app have not yet been implemented and are expected to be arriving with the release of 4.3. This of course implies that 4.3 will also be released on or around the 28th of February which has been further speculated. I think the extra time will do some good for the developers of The Daily giving them just a bit more time to refine and improve the app before the general public is expected to pay for it. We shall see!
