Review: FaceTime, Photobooth and Camera for iPad

28 Mar

I am lumping these three apps together as there isn’t a whole lot to say about them other than a few notes on how they work, additionally they are all now native apps on the iPad 2 and generally I don’t review the native apps but in this case given that these apps are newly introduced to this device, I felt that they were worth mentioning. If you have an iPad 2 then you don’t have to do anything to get these apps, they will be present when you first turn it on. If you do not yet have an iPad 2, then it is time to get one. If you have an iPhone 4 then you are probably use to using the FaceTime and Camera app, Mac users are likely familiar with the Photobooth app. All three of these apps function virtually identical to their counterparts even if they look a bit different.

I am an Apple Geek

21 Mar

I am an  geek, that much is obvious, I obsess over my apple gadgets and of course generally I must have all the latest and greatest. At home it is just my wife and myself yet we have more apple computers and toys than a normal household of 4 would. My co-workers have taken notice to this obsession and even have placed bets on my ability to go without apple gadgetry. I personally like my devices too much to indulge them, but recently a co-worker made a video based on his experience with me that is oddly quite accurate and so I wanted to share it with all of you. This video is inspired by my recent 25 hour wait in line (and camp out) for the iPad 2 *WARNING: BRIEF OBSCENE LANGUAGE AND INAPPROPRIATE CONTENT*:

Updated Review: iMovie (Universal App)

21 Mar

iMovie (Apple inc. $4.99) Universal App

iMovie was updated with the release of the iPad 2 last week and with the changes they have made to this app I am changing the rating from a 3 star to a 4 star app. There are many changes that come with this update including the ability to use iMovie on multiple devices. Although technically speaking it is a universal app, it doesn’t actually install on the first generation iPad. There are ways of getting around that and getting it to install on a first gen iPad but part of the reason  left it off that device was because of the slow CPU and lack of memory. There are a few minor differences between the iPad and iPhone versions of iMovie but for the most part it is identical. This review covers both versions of the app.

The Amazing Smart Covers

20 Mar

Apple introduced last week the new Smart Covers with the introduction of the iPad 2. The cover only works on the iPad 2 as it is specifically designed with the shape and characteristics of the iPad 2 in mind. These new covers are really quite fantastic and have come a long way toward providing adequate cover to the new iPads without getting in the way like the previous covers generally did. I really never liked having a case/cover on my first generation iPad, but given that I took it with me most places, I needed something to help protect it. Additionally, I needed a case that allowed me to prop up the iPad, stand it up or make it convenient for typing. The new Smart Covers really do their job, and well.

1 Week Later – Was It Worth It?

19 Mar

Here we are, 1 week later and the question on everyone’s mind is ‘was it worth it?’ I have had a lot of time to play with my iPad this week and although I have not had very much time at all to write about it, I wanted to make sure to write a few posts about the iPad 2. Everyone who knows me thinks of me as the biggest  geek they know, often times this means that most all around me come to me for advise about their iPad, information on apps and tips on usage. I am always happy to give them advise, after all, that is why I started this blog. It still amazes me though that they are so surprise at how excited I was to get my iPad 2. We went from a lot of questions of ‘Why’ last week, to questions of ‘was it worth it’ to now, ‘how can I get an iPad 2′.

The 25 Hour Wait

13 Mar

I had actually intended writing this blog post WHILE I was waiting, after all, what better to do when I really had nothing else to do. Unfortunately I found myself rather uncomfortable MOST of the time to the point that I just couldn’t bring myself to writing a blog post. I did however take notes, pictures and videos so that I could come back at a later time write the blog post! It was a long wait and as I mentioned, quite uncomfortable but in my opinion, totally worth it!! I got a bad sunburn (The curse of pale skin) and spent the night in what I consider to be colder than hell frozen over. But in the end I made it through and ended up the FIRST in line to purchase the all-new iPad 2.

Review: The All-New iPad 2

12 Mar

The iPad 2 (Prices vary by model)

As I am sure you are aware, the iPad 2 was released to the public yesterday, March 11, 2011. The widely anticipated release has put in our hands the best iPad on the market. As a matter of fact some reviewers have said that with the release of the iPad 2, it becomes the only tablet on the market. I too was there to purchase the iPad 2 yesterday and now that I have had sufficient time to use it, play with it and try things out I can give you a fair assessment. Of course many of you would probably expect me to give a perfect rating simply because of my obsession with . The truth is that I fully intend to give an unbiased rating, not because I love , but rather an assessment of how the device truly works.

Tomorrow is the Big Day! (iPad 2)

10 Mar

Tomorrow is the big day, the release of the iPad 2 and now the question you need to ask yourself is, will you be buying the iPad 2?? There are many reasons to buy it, and many reasons to not buy it. Each one as personal a choice as the next. For starters there are many who are disappointed by the lack of features made available on the iPad 2. They feel almost as if this version doesn’t go far enough to compelling a purchase. While they may be right, there are many reasons to purchase it if you don’t have one already or if you are like me, and will sell or give away your first generation iPad (mine is going to my wife) and buy the iPad 2. If you don’t already have one, it just doesn’t make sense to always be waiting for the next model. It is very easy to say, this update isn’t enough, I’ll wait for the next model. I even hear people talking about the supposed iPad 3 coming out in September with a retina display and SD card slot. These rumors serve you nothing to believe and it does no good to always be waiting for the next one.

Apple Releases iOS 4.3

09 Mar

Apple iOS 4.3

Apple today released iOS 4.3, an update to their iOS software for iPad, iPhone and iPod devices. Presumably with this release will also come an update to the TV given that one of the new features specifically is relative to using the AirPlay functionality in third party apps with your TV. The real question is, what does this update mean for you and how will it affect you.
