Today is the Big Day

04 Oct

Today is the big day, at 10:00 am PDT  will announce the future of the iPhone, iPods and iOS. There are many questions looming about what is coming today, not the least of which that has been on everyone’s mind is WHEN. Never fear, in just 6 short hours we will all be kicking back, watching some live blog of the event while the media elite enjoy the presentation in person. There are many things on my mind about what might be coming today. I have speculated about wireless charging or even a voice to text system and many many more things. Any one of which could be what we see. With the announcement finally here,  is sure to not disappoint, and you won’t have to wait much longer. So stay tuned, I’ll be posting updates here as they come. Today will be an exciting day!

The iPhone 5

31 Jul

With all the speculation out there surrounding the iPhone 5, I have a lot of friends coming to me asking when will it be released, should I buy it, what will it have. I find myself repeating over and over like a broken record. Yet for some reason people just don’t seem to understand, I don’t know what the iPhone 5 will have, it hasn’t been announced yet. And since it hasnt been announced yet, I also don’t know when it will be released. Sometimes I wonder why people can’t do the same research that I do and instead come to me, but in some ways it is flattering that so many consider me the definitive source. I am always willing to help out, especially when it comes to a discussion about  products, and so here is my device for all:

Be patient, the iPhone 5 will be here before you know it and, as always when it comes to , it will be worth it. If you are considering an iPhone, definitely wait as the iPhone 5 will be here soon and should you rush out and get an iPhone 4 right now, you will regret it later on. So, sit tight, it will be here before you know it.

Review: Lifelike Craig HD

30 Jul

Lifelike Craig HD – Craigslist for iPad and iPhone (Lifelike Apps, Inc. $1.99)

Another mobile client for using craigslist on your iPhone/iPad, Lifelike Craig is well designed and organized in a way that makes it easy to craigslist on your mobile devices. This app is a universal app and works virtually identical on both the iPhone and iPad with obvious differences in the UI to work with each individual device. This is definitely one of the better apps that I have seen for using craigslist. It is very well designed and provides very useful functionality for this type of use. This is a very good app with active developers that are working hard to improve it on a regular basis.

Developing For iPhone vs iPad

13 Apr

Recently at work I was tasked with the development of an iPhone/iPad app for a demo of our products at NAB this year. Although I have tinkered with iOS apps, writing a few things of my own, I am still relatively new to it so this was quite a task with very little time to complete it. I was able to complete the task and put together the apps for our demo, even if the apps don’t exactly look nice and are minimally functional, but for less than two weeks of development what can you expect right? At any rate, there is a lesson I learned through out this process that I wanted to touch on briefly here.

While writing my reviews here, on more than one occasion I have made a statement to the effect of: they have a good iPhone app, but why don’t they port it over to iPad, how hard could it be. Well, I just wanted to correct myself as I have been working on this I now see that there is so much more that must go into the process than just porting it over to the iPad. Te process is complex and lengthy to say the least. A new UI must be designed as things work differently on the iPad, not to mention the sheer difference in display size. And while it is easy to say that it should run on an iPad I can see from my little bit of experience just how hard it can be to really make that happen. So I official rescind that statement.

Pretty Much Non-Existant

12 Apr

It has been a while since I have posted anything, I know I keep saying more to come but I wanted to take a minute to make sure all of you know that I have not one anywhere, I am still here and I will continue to post on this blog. Over the past couple of weeks I was tasked (at my day job) with a project due for NAB, which started this week, and so as I have been leading up to NAB, I have had very little if any free time at all. But I am still here, I haven’t gone anywhere and I have definitely gained some perspective with the work I have been doing. More to come soon.

Review: FaceTime, Photobooth and Camera for iPad

28 Mar

I am lumping these three apps together as there isn’t a whole lot to say about them other than a few notes on how they work, additionally they are all now native apps on the iPad 2 and generally I don’t review the native apps but in this case given that these apps are newly introduced to this device, I felt that they were worth mentioning. If you have an iPad 2 then you don’t have to do anything to get these apps, they will be present when you first turn it on. If you do not yet have an iPad 2, then it is time to get one. If you have an iPhone 4 then you are probably use to using the FaceTime and Camera app, Mac users are likely familiar with the Photobooth app. All three of these apps function virtually identical to their counterparts even if they look a bit different.

Ignore The rumors for that is all they are!

27 Mar

I know it is tempting to listen to the rumor mills about what is up and coming in  land, I too once use to follow them actively and completely. However the fact of the matter is that the rumors are RARELY true. Sure a few of them get it right every now and again, and I hear it time after time from people around me, ‘this is the same source that successfully predicted the iPhone 4′. Believe me, I know, when you are throwing out hundreds of rumors each one contradicting the last it is easy to eventually get one right especially when someone accidentally leaves your product in a bar. At the end of the day these are all just rumors and one thing I have learned about  over the years is this: no matter what the rumors say, no matter what I want or expect to see, what ever it is that Apple has planned will surely outshine anything I could have hoped for. I’ve seen it year after year with every recent product release including each of the iPhone, iPod and now iPad models, every time people speculate about what this release will bring and every time, Apple releases something far better, but different from what the speculators stated would come.

Remember something, just because some well known news organization states that  will or even MUST release a specific feature with their next release, doesn’t mean that Apple is actually required to do anything. Far too often I see speculators talking about things they believe will be apart of the next iPhone or the next iPad and then when the actual product is released they get mad at Apple for screwing up. Likewise people speculate that a product or update will be released by a certain date and when that doesn’t happy they say that  missed their deadline. Apple is not beholden to news organizations or rumor mills. They have no responsilbity to meet the expectations set out by these groups of people and in general you’d be wise to avoid them as well.

There is a lot of speculation going around right now about the upcoming iPhone, updates to MobileMe and even the iPad 3. NONE of these things have yet been announced by  nor will I believe any of the rumors until  actually does make their announcement. So when I hear people talking about  having to delay the iPhone 5 release or even hear them talking about a June release date all I can do is laugh because NONE of you know anything about that until  makes their announcement.

I am an Apple Geek

21 Mar

I am an  geek, that much is obvious, I obsess over my apple gadgets and of course generally I must have all the latest and greatest. At home it is just my wife and myself yet we have more apple computers and toys than a normal household of 4 would. My co-workers have taken notice to this obsession and even have placed bets on my ability to go without apple gadgetry. I personally like my devices too much to indulge them, but recently a co-worker made a video based on his experience with me that is oddly quite accurate and so I wanted to share it with all of you. This video is inspired by my recent 25 hour wait in line (and camp out) for the iPad 2 *WARNING: BRIEF OBSCENE LANGUAGE AND INAPPROPRIATE CONTENT*:

Updated Review: iMovie (Universal App)

21 Mar

iMovie (Apple inc. $4.99) Universal App

iMovie was updated with the release of the iPad 2 last week and with the changes they have made to this app I am changing the rating from a 3 star to a 4 star app. There are many changes that come with this update including the ability to use iMovie on multiple devices. Although technically speaking it is a universal app, it doesn’t actually install on the first generation iPad. There are ways of getting around that and getting it to install on a first gen iPad but part of the reason  left it off that device was because of the slow CPU and lack of memory. There are a few minor differences between the iPad and iPhone versions of iMovie but for the most part it is identical. This review covers both versions of the app.
