UPDATED Review: WordPress (Universal App)

WordPress (Automattic FREE) Universal App

*UPDATE*

WordPress has recently updated this app a few times, bringing a few new features but mostly fixing a lot of the problems this app use to have. There are now less crashes and less problems in general, and fewer issues of the app mangling my posts. I am now upgrading this app from a 2 star to a 3 star because they have definitely improved the app. At this point it is much less of a headache, they’ve add in a few things like the resizing of photos can be a specific size if you always use that size and adding images puts them at the top of the list instead of the bottom. The app still is not perfect, infact my update that I tried to post to this post from the app failed.

Review: Pages (iPad)

06 Dec

Pages (Apple Inc. $9.99)

This is an iPad only app, I have not heard any word at present that they will be porting it over to the iPhone, nor do I really think they should. This caliber of app really needs the larger screen to function properly. Not to mention, who would want to write a document that would need an app like Pages (to write it in) on the iPhone?? I use to be an M$ Word user, of course that was moreover back in the days of me using windoze. But that did carry over slightly to my Mac days when I first got Office for Mac but for some reason I never could get it to function properly (I wonder why ;) ). It was always one of those apps that I hesitated to ever open for fear of the problems I’ll have because of it.

When I bought my iPad, this was one of the first apps I bought for it and I have loved having it ever since. I have also since then gotten the Mac version of Pages and now use that on all of my macs at home and work. It is definitely more lightweight than M$ Word, but that is, in my opinion, a benefit of Pages. For now I will restrain myself and talk specifically about the iPad app but it is important to note that a lot of this information applies to the desktop app as well and it is worth looking into.

The iPad app is pretty much fully functioning as far as features go, there are definitely a few limitations, but those come mostly from the limitations of the device itself and obviously less viewing space than on your laptop or desktop. But for the size and what it is capable of it does the job and well. When you first launch the app there is a document already there for you waiting for you to read which goes through a quick tutorial on how to use the app. It even has some tasks for you to do that will help you learn how to do that sort of thing on your own. In addition to the app, Apple provides a FREE (beta) service www.iwork.com. This is a great way to store your documents, moving them back and forth between your desktop and iPad versions or even send them to other people. Unfortunately that service is greatly limited. There is no way to “edit” a file once uploaded to iWork.com the best you can hope for is to delete it and then re-add it which defeats the purpose to some extent since the service allows you to share documents and allow those with whom you’ve shared your documents to comment. Nonetheless it is a great feature to have, you can both get and put with this service, when you send a document to someone (in the form of a link to this service) you are given the option of format for the document including M$ Word, PDF and Pages or you can have all formats available.

Review: iOS 4.2.1 (iPhone and iPad)

22 Nov

The long awaited release of iOS 4.2.1 is finally here. If you have not yet upgraded I encourage you to do so, it is absolutely worth the update. I have been using it on my iDevices for several months now and am so use to the features that when I touch a device without iOS 4.2 I am uncomfortable with it. I cannot imagine going back to a time when I did NOT have multitasking on my iPad. I have been reluctant to speak about iOS 4.2.1 until now because, as a developer, I am under NDA. Although some may take that lightly, I do not. But now that it is released, I can speak freely about the features that this update brings.

The majority of new features by far are on the iPad as this is the first update to the iPad with 4.x. That being said I will likely focus the majority of this post on the iPad version, but needless to say, this update brings a unification of the iPad and iPhone versions of iOS 4.x so just about everything you will see on the iPad is something that will now be (or already is) on the iPhone. That of course means all the benefits that we have seen with iOS 4.1 on the iPhone are now available for the iPad (finally!!) Additionally, all the new features such as AirPlay and AirPrint are now available for all devices that support them. The iPad just became all that much more useful in my opinion. Never fear Jailbreakers, my understanding is there is already a Jailbreak available for 4.2.1. It shouldn’t be too hard to find more information about that subject on the interwebs.

*MY* Top 10 iPad Apps

14 Nov

Although there are many iPad apps that I really like and that will vary from category to category, there are several apps that I use on a very consistent basis (practically every hour of the waking day).  These are the apps that I like the most and get the most use out of.  For the sake of this post I will not be including any native apps in this top 10 list.  Obviously I use quite frequently apps like the Calendar app and the iPod app as well as apps like YouTube and Maps.  But the purpose of this list is to give you an idea of the App Store apps that I feel bring me the most value.  I will give you a short description of each and then later link to a full review of each app.  Every app that I list and/or review is an app that I have purchased.

Here they are listed in order of how much I use them, 1 being the most:
