News Apps — iPad Style

18 Feb

I have reviewed several news apps so far on this site, it is probably fairly obvious by now that more than anything, my iDevices serve as more of a utilitarian device than for gaming. For me, being able to read the news is key to the utility that I gain from the devices. This is how I stay in touch with the world, technology and in general things I want to know. The iPad in general makes for a GREAT environment for reading the news, especially if you are making the transition from traditional news papers to internet news applications. Here I will outline for you the top news apps I have found so far and details about each app. As far as I see it, there are two kinds of news apps, 1. RSS Readers 2. Actual News apps. Personally I prefer the RSS Readers to the Actual News apps because it gives me the control over what news I receive.

Here are my top 5 iPad News Apps listed in order of my preference:

Review: The River of News (iPad)

11 Dec

River of News – RSS Google Reader (Idyllic Code $3.99)

This app is a news aggregator comparable to Pulse News Reader or The Early Edition. However unlike most other RSS apps for the iPad, The River of News provides a unique experience when reading news. The idea behind the app is to provide you with one long roll of never ending news, thus the name, River of News. They have done a good job of putting together the app but I think the real question is whether or not it is worth the cost. I’ll present the information then let you know what I think. I have purchased this app in an effort to determine the best News app for the iPad, and am speaking about the app from my experience having used it.

There aren’t many news apps that present news in this manner. It is definitely an interesting idea although it is essentially providing you with one really long toilet paper roll of news. The app has a variety of options available including the ability to sync directly with Google Reader (that is a big plus). Although I haven’t tried it without a Google Reader account to see if it still works, so I cant speak to that, but I have seen several complaints that it does not. The app is NOT a universal app which is strangely something I look for in an a Google Reader syncing app. I am fine over all with The Early Edition not being a universal app I think mostly because that app needs the larger screen. But The River of News would be nice as a universal app. The overall view of the app is nice and well presented. It is easy to navigate by swiping left and right to switch between feeds and scrolling down to read the current feed. There are no glaring issues in my mind. This is definitely a well done app and well suited for you if you like this way of reading your news.

Review: Pulse News Reader (iPad)

18 Nov

Pulse News Reader (Alphonso Labs Inc. FREE) iPad

Pulse is now free, but does that make it worth getting?? With this app it does! Not all free apps are necessarily worth it. As a matter of fact, I’d rather pay for the app than deal with the headache of a non-function app. I get apps for a reason, and when i need a good news reader, i want one that works. Is that the case with Pulse News Reader? For me the experience was quite positive so, I’d say yes that this app is definitely worth a try to see if it fits your style. There are definitely pros and cons to this RSS reader over others, and while none of them are perfect, this app does go a long way toward giving you a great user experience. Although I must say, I likely never would have tried it if it hadn’t been offered for free. When I was looking for the right app, I saw many and went through a process to choose the correct app, but for some reason, this app just didn’t do it for me. I don’t remember why, but I will say that now that I have tried it, I am much more likely to recommend it. Its position at the top of the top 25 chart in the app store certainly speaks for itself!

The application starts out with a number of feeds already setup and ready to use. This is just to get you going and of course you can delete or keep any of them. From there you can add all of your own feeds, including linking to your Google Reader account to import the feeds you’ve already been using.  Once they are all imported, the articles show up in the form of a grid with each row being a separate feed.  Simply click on any article to view it in more detail or to view the web page of that article. You can also “Favorite” (or save for later) articles using a free Pulse account that you can setup right through the app, or you can publish the articles directly to Facebook and Twitter.
