News Apps — iPad Style

18 Feb

I have reviewed several news apps so far on this site, it is probably fairly obvious by now that more than anything, my iDevices serve as more of a utilitarian device than for gaming. For me, being able to read the news is key to the utility that I gain from the devices. This is how I stay in touch with the world, technology and in general things I want to know. The iPad in general makes for a GREAT environment for reading the news, especially if you are making the transition from traditional news papers to internet news applications. Here I will outline for you the top news apps I have found so far and details about each app. As far as I see it, there are two kinds of news apps, 1. RSS Readers 2. Actual News apps. Personally I prefer the RSS Readers to the Actual News apps because it gives me the control over what news I receive.

Here are my top 5 iPad News Apps listed in order of my preference:

The Daily Hands Out Subscription Extension

13 Feb

The Daily free trial has been extended until the end of the month so those of you who are giving it a go right now will have some more time to play around with it and see if it is the right app for you. Originally The Daily was offering a free 2 week trial for all users, but many of those users are now seeing (upon viewing their subscription expiration date) an end date of February 28, 2011. Many suspect that the reasoning behind this extension is because the in-app subscription based charges that are required for this app have not yet been implemented and are expected to be arriving with the release of 4.3. This of course implies that 4.3 will also be released on or around the 28th of February which has been further speculated. I think the extra time will do some good for the developers of The Daily giving them just a bit more time to refine and improve the app before the general public is expected to pay for it. We shall see!

The Daily updates their app

09 Feb

One thing you have to give to them, they are trying. I can’t tell you how many times a new app is released with significant bugs and it takes forever to get an update fixing them. There is nothing more frustrating than purchasing an app only to find that it has some serious usability issues and to not be able to find a developer who cares a darn about the fact that their app doesn’t work. With The Daily, sure it had some issues, more and more as time went on most because more were found as it was used more. Shortly after releasing their app, the internet was abuzz with mixed reviews. Some really liked the app, others complained about the issues, The Daily quickly released a blog post saying that they were hearing the complaints loud and clear and working to correct them. Now that is what I like to hear.

Review: The Daily (iPad)

06 Feb

The Daily (The Daily Holdings Inc. FREE) * free with a subscription $0.99 per week or $39.99 per year.

When The Daily was first released, the number one question that came to mind was, how does News Corp expect people to purchase a news app for $40 per year, when they can get just about any other news app for under $5? When I say any other news app, I am referring to the myriad of news aggregators available in the app store. Some are less than $5, some are free. Either way, the key here is the fact that the news is free, and with that in mind, how on earth do they expect to turn a profit on an already dying business? This is an iPad only app, but that is to be expect for an app of this caliber.

Apple brings in-app subscription service starting with “The Daily”

02 Feb

We all knew it was coming, and now it is finally here. Apple introduced today the ability to process in-app subscription fees. This means that now app sellers can sell apps that have recurring subscription fees which is quite convenient for something like a newspaper or magazine. The first app to bring this to us is The Daily. Now the question really is, which is the bigger news here, that we can now have subscription based apps, or that News Corp has joined the slew of PAID apps in the app store for the iPad. The implications of recurring billing is far greater than just what news has to provide, it can be used for any sort of on going services as well as things like donation based not for profit companies. Now as far as this app goes, the real question is, how does this app stack up and compare to others. This app is featured for $.99 a week or $39.99 per year. That makes it quite a bit more expensive than any other news app currently in the app store. In order to sell this, they have got to provide a lot more than your average news reader does. This may be the solution to newspapers being a dying business or it may speed up the process. You may find my review of this app here.

Additionally, here is some information provided directly by the makers of the app, News Corp. I am including information provided directly from the link above (the press release for this app) in my posting here with their permission. Feel free to head on over and read the full press release. In the meantime, I’ll be in touch soon with my full review!
